GOP Fights to Eliminate Food Tax; Thompson Retaliates
GOP FIGHTS TO ELIMINATE FOOD TAX;THOMPSON RETALIATES
State GOP Chair Proud Of Bold Effort of Republican Caucus
CHARLESTON, WV – During the House floor debate of the bill to lower the food tax by 1%, House Republicans attempted to amend the bill to allow floor debate for the complete elimination of the tax. Speaker of the House Rick Thompson abused the rules process and blocked GOP efforts.
Today, Delegate Ron Walters (R-Kanawha) made a motion that all bills be read in the entirety on the floor of the House of Delegates on 3rd reading, the prerogative of any member of either party. Speaker Thompson’s response was to retaliate and remove Delegate Walters from his position of the powerful House Finance Committee.
“The people of West Virginia can be very proud of the efforts of Republicans in the House of Delegates to eliminate the food tax for all West Virginians,” said Mike Stuart, Chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party. “I am so very proud of Republican efforts. Unfortunately, Rick Thompson abused his powers and blocked every effort to completely eliminate the food tax and, ultimately, retaliated against Delegate Ron Walters and the Republican caucus.”
“Ron Walters is to be admired for his bold action today to require the reading of all bills on the floor of the Legislature. Like Rick Thompson, Nancy Pelosi did not think it was important to read legislative bills,” continued Mike Stuart. “We see how that worked out for her.”
“Rick Thompson is not a good leader. If his management of the House is any indication of how he would manage the affairs of state, Thompson is not qualified nor does he have the temperament to be Governor,” said Stuart. “His conduct today was reprehensible and disgraceful. Rick Thompson is singularly and solely responsible for failing to totally eliminate the food tax.”
Mike Stuart concluded, “The Republican Party will not be bullied by the brutish conduct of a political tool of the labor lobby and the plaintiff’s bar. We shall continue to fight for the people of West Virginia regardless of any political punishment of our members by Rick Thompson.”
