Leadership Vacuum Causes “Christmas in March”LEADERSHIP VACUUM CAUSES “CHRISTMAS IN MARCH”
State GOP Head Says Special Interests Control Democrat Agenda
CHARLESTON, W.VA. – As a result of the Special Election of 2010, West Virginia experienced a leadership vacuum that led to power grabs, court cases, in-fighting, and a new special election. In addition to the costs of the election, taxpayers are left to foot the bills for hundreds of millions from the leadership vacuum and the new control of the Legislative agenda by the special interests. The effects of the 2010 Special Election will be felt by taxpayers for decades.
“”Christmas in March” is the theme of this legislative session," said Mike Stuart, Chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party. “Because of the leadership vacuum caused by Joe Manchin and the in-fighting between Democrat leaders who all want to Governor, lobbyists and special interests have been allowed to hijack the legislative agenda.”
“Tomblin, Thompson, Kessler, Tennant and Perdue are all playing the role of Santa Claus this year. Sadly, their gift bags are only filled with tax increases, give-aways, and presents for special interests all paid for by the taxpayers,” continued Stuart. “I hope there is a Christmas tree in the Capital.”
“So far, not a single dollar has been cut from the state budget this year but spending increases are piling up under the tree. Millions of dollars for a huge and massive pay raise for judges, more than $70 million for pay raises for government workers, teachers, and school service workers, a Constitutional amendment making it easier to pass levy tax increases, shifting control of personal property taxes to the Legislature, exempting retirement benefits for PEIA from state income tax for select groups, and on and on,” said Stuart. “The Legislature doesn’t understand it is our money – not theirs.”
“The people of West Virginia are held hostage by politicians, lobbyists and special interests more concerned with their election or subsidies than the budget of working families. Their “Christmas in March” will lead to a “Blue Christmas” for too many working families,” concluded Stuart. “
