Liberal Democrats Want Easier Tax Increases
LIBERAL DEMOCRATS WANT EASIER TAX INCREASESState GOP Head Says “If Passed” GOP Will Work For Its Defeat
CHARLESTON, W.VA. – The House Judiciary Committee has approved a bill to let voters decide if counties and municipalities may pass bonds and levies by a simple majority through passage of a constitutional amendment. The measure would be on the ballot in 2012.
“Shame on the liberal Democrats in the House for trying to make levy tax increases easier to pass," said Mike Stuart, Chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party. “They can put it on the ballot, but we will work for its certain defeat. Tax increases on the people of West Virginia should not be easy to approve. The liberal Democrats and government units are simply addicted to taxpayer money. They think we work for them.”
House Joint Resolution 29 proposes a constitutional amendment to provide for city and county levy measures to pass more easily with a 50 percent majority from the present supermajority of 60 percent.
“If the Legislature approves this ill-conceived bill, we look forward to taking the issue to the people of West Virginia in next year’s election,” continued Stuart. “We will make clear those that passed it. I can personally guarantee its defeat because the people of West Virginia are taxed enough. Taxpayers understand that the government addiction to taxpayer money doesn’t need a twelve-step program to break but, rather, one-step – a vote on whether to increase taxes.”
“It is truly unfortunate that the House Judiciary Committee appears so out of touch with the people of West Virginia,” said Stuart. “Among the terrible things they have approved this session have been a massive pay raise for judges and now a Constitutional Amendment to raise taxes from hard-working West Virginians. It is time to elect a Republican majority.”
