Resolution Offensive to West Virginia Taxpayers
RESOLUTION OFFENSIVE TO WV TAXPAYERSState GOP Head Commends Wisconsin Governor
CHARLESTON, WV – The House of Delegates intends to introduce a resolution (House Resolution No. 40) during this session to express support for Wisconsin union workers and condemning Republicans and Wisconsin Governor Walker. Sixty-three members of the House have sponsored the sweeping, dramatic Resolution. The Resolution actually calls Wisconsin Governor Walker’s legislation as “unfortunate proposal that would be detrimental to thousands of hard-working Wisconsin citizens.” Additionally, the House of Delegates has refused to take up resolutions affecting West Virginia including one in support of transparency in redistricting throughout the state.
“It is regretful, disturbing and offensive that the House of Delegates would take up a resolution to curry favor with WV organized labor, attack the lawful actions of a Governor of another state, and endorse the radical behavior of those that would flee and attack rather than constructively work for solutions to a budget crisis,” said Mike Stuart, Chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party. “Governor Walker is to be commended for his courageous actions to prevent the outright bankruptcy of a state the result of which would be the loss of jobs for thousands of workers and the displacement of thousands of families.
“It is beyond hypocrisy that in a state in which our public pension system is in debt by more than $8 billion, the very House of Delegates that has been complicit in creating the problem and has refused to seriously address solutions for the West Virginia budget would criticize the efforts of another state’s Governor to address and solve a serious budget crisis,” said Stuart. “The mere fact that the House of Delegates would waste serious time in a critical Legislative session for this resolution is offensive when WV’s unemployment rate is surging, state spending is out of control, and we have our own serious budget challenges.”
Stuart continued, "The resolution is embarrassing to the State of West Virginia. This type of thing could cause businesses looking to locate operations in West Virginia to decide the risk is too great and the leadership too beholden to organized labor. Does the State Democrat Party and Democrat candidates for Governor support this kind of foolishness that could ultimately be very destructive to our economy?”
“Wisconsin lawmakers skipped their elected obligations and fled the state. Thousands have lay siege to the state capitol in Madison as public union members, often seen carrying violent, threatening signs are protesting the absolute need for union employees to pay a small percentage, half of the national average in the private sector, of their health insurance and pension contribution. Union organizers have even surrounded the private home of Governor Walker,” said Stuart. “If this is what Rick Thompson and the liberals in the House of Delegates support, then West Virginians should truly be concerned. It is time for more reasonable leadership in Charleston.”
"Our House of Delegates should be focused on West Virginia issues - not Wisconsin," concluded Stuart. "With so many challenges facing West Virginia working families and newly unemployed families, why on earth would they waste our precious time and taxpayer dollars for this kind of action."
