The Democrats Call This "Reasonable" -- Really!
STATE BUDGET GROWS BY TENS OF MILLIONSState GOP Head Says “Stop Spending And Start Tightening Belt”
CHARLESTON, W.VA. – In the 2011 Legislative Session, massive spending bills have been passed or are advancing including over $70 million per year for teacher and government workers, $6 million for judges, a bonus bill for public employees, as well as other fees and increases to the taxpayer’s budget.
“This session the Legislature has added hundreds of millions of dollars of irresponsible new spending obligations to the taxpayers over the next ten years. Sadly, there has not been $1 cut from the budget so far this year," said Mike Stuart, Chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party. “Tomblin and the liberal Democrats in control of the Legislature have said we can’t afford to reduce the food tax but they can find tens and tens of millions for pay raises and other pet projects.”
“While Democrat Chairman Larry Puccio proudly calls the massive spending increases ‘responsible’, I suspect his support of hundreds of millions of dollars in new spending has more to do with his job as a lobbyist for the special interest,” continued Stuart. “Lobbyists never advocate cutting government waste. They don’t work for or care about the taxpayers,” continued Stuart. “Puccio is a lobbyist. How can you be a lobbyist and Chairman for the state's majority party?”
“Where are the raises for taxpayers?” said Stuart. “We need jobs. We need to eliminate the food tax. We need to get rid of the West Virginia tax on social security benefits. We need to tighten our belts like the rest of the nation and like ordinary families. Instead of tax cuts or cutting the state budget, Tomblin and his duo in the House and State Senate can’t seem to find a single dollar to cut from the budget. Not a single dollar. A tax cut is a pay raise for working families.”
“We need new leadership. Gasoline prices are soaring. Food prices are rising faster than family budgets. Unemployment in West Virginia is skyrocketing under Tomblin from 8.8% to 10.3% in a few months. And yet, Tomblin and the Legislature continue to spend, spend, spend. Clearly, they did not get the memo that the national and state economy is in terrible shape,” continued Stuart. “It is time for a wake-up call by the voters.”
