The "Tomblin Bill" Gives Away $100 Million

THE “TOMBLIN BILL” SIGNED INTO LAW
GIVING AWAY $100 MILLION

Tomblin Close Friends With Gambling Industry And Lobbyists Behind SB550

CHARLESTON, WV – The “Tomblin Bill” was signed into law today by Senate President acting as Governor Earl Ray Tomblin.  The bill gives the state’s largest casino operators $100 million of taxpayer money to buy new equipment and upgrade facilities owned by the casino operators.  Tomblin has a long history in the gambling industry through family businesses and is very close friends with the lobbyists that represent the casino industry in West Virginia.

“Today the Senate President acting as Governor signed into law the “Tomblin Bill” to give away $100 million of taxpayer dollars with no strings attached to the multi-billion companies that control and own casinos in West Virginia and the out-of-state competition," said Mike Stuart, Chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party.  “Tomblin has been a very good friend to the gambling industry and the lobbyists that drove the legislation to passage. It is sad but not surprising that Tomblin continues to deliver the goods to the gambling industry. I am sure the stockholders of the casino operators are very happy today.”

“Greyhound racing has been a great recipient of the growth of the video lottery and casino business and today a great payday has been awarded to Penn National, MTR, and Tri-State,” said Stuart.  “It is not a secret that Tomblin’s family is closely tied to the gambling industry so it is understandable that the Tomblin Bill was eagerly supported by him. The Republican Party may need to begin to examine more specific records at the Racing Commission.”

“The bill was heavily influenced by two lobbyists – one that is best friends with Tomblin and represents MTR Gaming and the other that is head of the Democrat Party and the lobbyist for Charlestown Raceway and Casino and the Greenbrier,” said Stuart.  “This is not too hard to figure out.  The folks controlling the Democrat Party are working hard to deliver the goods to the billion dollar companies getting a free $100 million.”

“The companies that will be given the $100 million are very successful with very large budgets,” continued Stuart.  “Perhaps Penn National with its $2.5 billion budget will lend some money to Blenko Glass to save a few of the 41 workers out of its 49 person workforce that have lost their jobs in the past week because they are having difficulty surviving in this tough economy.  Rather than give $100 million to the large casino operators, West Virginia should be asking the casino operators for money – they have more than we do.”

“Giving $100 million to large, multi-billion dollar companies while ordinary folks are losing jobs and can barely survive is not only wrong, it is the reason so many people distrust government,” concluded Stuart.  “While Tomblin is giving away free taxpayer money and fighting for the casinos, ordinary folks are given the shaft.  Blenko, Ravenswood Aluminum, Flowers Baking, and on and on – $100 million for the casinos but not a dime to help save so many great companies.”

"With Earl Ray "Greyhound" Tomblin, Natalie "Emily" Tennant, and Rick "Wisconsin" Thompson as the leading candidates for Governor on the Democrat side of the aisle, it makes me feel very good about the odds of a Republican winning the Governorship in October.  Our GOP candidates are remarkable job creators and leaders while the Democrats are extremists who are controlled by and working for the special interests," concluded Stuart.
