THOMPSON MISLEADING PUBLIC ABOUT FOOD TAXStuart Says Speaker Thompson Record, Not Rhetoric, Should Guide Voters
CHARLESTON, WV – Rick Thompson, Speaker of the House of Delegates and candidate for Governor, is running television commercials touting his desire to eliminate the state sales tax on food. Thompson, however, has personally blocked attempts on numerous occasions by Republicans to eliminate the food tax, most recently in the 2011 legislative session.
“Rick Thompson’s memory must be failing him regarding the food tax," said Mike Stuart, Chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party. “Thompson could have eliminated the food tax but for years he has blocked every Republican attempt to do so. If Rick Thompson is willing to eliminate the food tax as Governor, why won’t he do so as Speaker of the House?”
“For years, Republicans have introduced legislation to eliminate the food tax but Thompson and the Democrats have blocked every attempt to lessen the tax burden and grocery bill of working families,” said Stuart. “Rick Thompson saying he supports eliminating the food tax would be funny if it were not so sad. Rick Thompson can say whatever he wants to try to get elected but his record speaks volumes.”
“While Rick Thompson was busy passing some of the largest budget give-aways and spending increases in the history of West Virginia, he personally worked to block the total elimination of the food tax,” said Stuart. “Keep in mind, this is the same guy that stated his proudest moment as Speaker was passing a non-binding resolution condemning the duly elected Governor of Wisconsin and supporting the extremist behavior of striking Wisconsin union workers.”
“If Rick Thompson really wanted to eliminate the food tax, he should have done it,” said Stuart. “The voters would be wise to remember the saying, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” The voters are too smart to believe Thompson’s ridiculous rhetoric. Thompson is nothing more than a tax and spend liberal with a record to prove it.”
