Tomblin & Legislature Should Move WV Presidential Primary

TOMBLIN & LEGISLATURE SHOULD MOVE WV PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY
Stuart Says Tomblin Should Request Legislative Action To Protect WV Interests

CHARLESTON, W.V. – As presently in effect, West Virginians play little to no role in selecting the Democrat and Republican nominees for President of the United States. West Virginia is currently near the end of the line when selecting its choice for President of the United States. In 2012, at least thirty-six states are scheduled to pick their Presidential candidate before Mountain State voters will head to the polls on May 8, 2012. Since the modern day primary began, the May primary in West Virginia has rarely played any meaningful role in selecting the Presidential nominees.

“It is time to move up the WV Presidential Primary to ensure that West Virginians have more say in picking the presidential nominees," said Mike Stuart, Chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party. “We owe it to our coal miners and West Virginia families to ensure that the issues that are critical and unique to the future of West Virginia are reflected in the selection of a President of the United States.”

“West Virginia jobs are under assault by the Obama Administration and the EPA,” said Stuart. “It is critically important that West Virginia and our coal mining, natural gas, and other unique interests play a role in picking the President. Perhaps if West Virginia played a more prominent role in picking the President, Obama and his Administration would be more sympathetic to the coal industry and West Virginia jobs.”

“Today, Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada lead the process of picking the next President. Those states have little in common with the drivers of West Virginia’s economy,” said Stuart. “By the time West Virginia picks its nominee for president, the selection is generally irrelevant and West Virginia families and coal miners get left behind in the process.”

“Earl Ray Tomblin should immediately call on the Legislature to move up the 2012 West Virginia Presidential Primary to a date much earlier in the election calendar to ensure that West Virginia plays a prominent role in picking the nominees for President,” said Stuart. “Given the assault on West Virginia by the federal government and the EPA, it is critical that West Virginia no longer sit on the back bench of picking the President.”

Stuart concluded, “Tomblin and the Legislature can very easily change the WV Presidential Primary and make a bold statement to the nation that a candidate for President has to go through and to West Virginia before getting to the White House. West Virginia is too important to the nation for it to continue to be irrelevant in the selection of a President.”
